Inspired by Montessori’s knobbed cylinders, the pincer grasp generally develops after the palmer grasp. Working the small muscles in their hand, this helps develop fine motor skills which will assist in other levels of dexterity, such as writing and buttoning clothing. As with the palmer, the pincer aids in developing hand-eye coordination and control. This work may be introduced as early as 9 months, or once the child shows interest in pinching.
